SHH-U induces different cell fates in the developing neural tube. Plasmids expressing SHH-U or wt SHH were electroporated into one side of a Hamburger and Hamilton stage 10–12 chick neural tube. The ectopic induction or repression of the SHH-regulated homeodomain transcription factors Nkx2.2 and Pax6 was then determined by in situ analyses, relative to the nonelectroporated contralateral side of the neural tube in three separate experiments.
