Virus-specific eCTL activity in the BAL. The cells were pooled from seven mice, either early (day 13, • ■) or late (day 76, ○ □) in infection of I-A^b−/− (• ○) or I-A^b+/+ mice (■ □). Flow cytometric analysis for the %CD8⁺ in populations recovered by BAL on day 13 and day 76, respectively, showed typically 40% and 20% in the I-A^b+/+ mice, and 75% and 50% in the I-A^b−/− mice. The mean ± SD total cell counts per mouse from the BAL on day 13 and day 76 were 2.6 ± 0.8 × 10⁵ and 0.6 ± 0.1 × 10⁵ in the I-A^b+/+ group, and 2.0 ± 0.8 × 10⁵ and 1.4 ± 0.8 × 10⁵ in the I-A^b−/− group. The results shown are representative of three separate experiments. Net % specific lysis = % specific lysis of MHV-68-infected targets − % specific lysis of uninfected targets. Specific lysis of uninfected targets was <5%.
