Anesthetized (fluorothane, 1–2%) preBötC rats do not have spontaneous respiratory activity. However, lung deflation induces diaphragmatic activity (Dia. EMG, top). Arrows point to short-lasting (<100 ms) lung deflations that induce bursts of diaphragmatic activity leading to airflow.
