Counseling principles

Counseling patients using dietary supplements
1. Ask at each medical visit about the use of dietary supplements.
2. Document details of product ingredients, examine original product container.
3. If necessary set-up a special encounter to review all supplements used.
4. Evaluate and address unidentified needs such as depression, anxiety, cost issues.
5. Document dietary supplement use details on medical records.
6. Obtain access to up to date evidence-based information resources on dietary supplements for entire health care team.
7. Provide counseling on safety, efficacy and potential drug interactions.
8. Report suspected adverse reactions or drug interactions to MedWatch (16).
