Furfural causes internal cellular damage. Exponentially growing yeast cells grown with either no inhibitor (1st row) or 25 mM furfural (2nd and 3rd rows) were fixed and thin-sectioned for transmission electron microscopy analysis after they had been exposed to furfural for 8 h.
