The average rate of CO2 production per cell was compared between planktonic cells in the exponential phase of growth, biofilm-derived effluent cells, the shear-susceptible biofilm, and the non-shear-susceptible base biofilm layer. Activity of the shear-susceptible biofilm layer was determined in situ (as part of the biofilm) and as suspended cells after removal from the biofilm.
