Matrix metalloproteinase–9 (MMP-9) bands were increased in ischemic hemispheres compared to contralateral hemispheres. Ischemic elevations in MMP-9 were significantly reduced in tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase—1 (TIMP-1) brains compared to wild-type brains. No significant differences in MMP-2 response were detected (data not shown). Note that MMP-9 bands appear mostly to correspond to lower molecular weight (MW) active forms, whereas both pro- and active MMP-2 bands are detected. *p < 0.05; n = 5 per group.
