Helminth parasite cysteine protease protects mice from LPS-induced lethality. A, mice (n = 15) were pretreated with a single intraperitoneal injection of 50 μl of active cysteine protease enzyme (FheCL1, 1 mg/ml) or PBS 2 h prior to an intraperitoneal injection of LPS (10 mg/kg) and observed over 70 h. Data presented are representative of two independent experiments. Levels of proinflammatory mediators TNFα, IL-6, and IL-12 were measured in the sera (B) and peritoneal lavage fluid of mice (n = 6) (C) at 2 and 4 h after an intraperitoneal injection of LPS (10 mg/kg).
