Control reactions 1 to 3 were carried out with RNA from uninfected control mice, strain 927 reactions 1 to 3 used RNA extracted from mice infected with strain 927, and strain 247 reactions 1 to 3 used RNA from mice infected with strain 247. Negative controls (absence of reverse transcriptase and no-template controls) were all negative in each case (data not shown).
