Using alternating images to measure the rate at which observers can report numbers and how that compares over different brain regions. (A) When a character is alternated slowly with its negative image, it is easy to identify. (B) As the rate of alternation speeds up, the patterns fuse into a uniform field, indistinguishable from any other character and its negative.
