Acceptable Indications For Acid-Suppressive Medications

  • Symptomatic GERD within the last three months

  • Active gastrointestinal bleeding within the last three months

  • Documented peptic ulcer disease

  • Documented erosive esophagitis

  • Prolonged NSAID use

  • Prolonged corticosteroid use

  • Treatment of Helicobacter pylori gastritis (for 1 to 2 weeks)

  • Non-ulcer dyspepsia

  • Underlying coagulopathy

  • Mechanical ventilation for greater than 48 hours

GERD = gastroesophageal reflux disease; NSAID = nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
