TABLE 1.

Comparison of cytospin-enhanced DFA and real-time TaqMan RT-PCR for swine origin influenza virus (S-OIV)

Swine influenza A virus RT-PCR result No. of samples with the following cytospin-DFA result for influenza A virus:
Total no. of samples
Positive Negative Indeterminatea
Positive 230 33 9 272
Negative 2b 275c 8 285
Total no. of samples 232 310 17 557
a

Atypical staining requiring confirmation by PCR or culture.

b

Two hospitalized children, one 12-year-old child with pneumonia and one 9-month-old child with bronchiolitis, had 1 or 2 influenza virus-positive cells by DFA.

c

SimulFluor cytospin-DFA also detected 17 parainfluenza infections, 2 RSV infections, and 1 adenovirus infection. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value for cytospin-DFA were 84.6%, 99.3%, 99.1%, and 87.2%, respectively.
