Effectiveness of the sucrose block during electrical stimulation (black bars under traces). A, Schematic diagram of the two-ganglion (M3–M4) preparation. To block neural signals in the connectives, saline in the bow-tie-shaped well was replaced with an isotonic sucrose solution. Reintroduction of saline in the well restored neural transmission. Connectives anterior to M3 were stimulated for 1 s using a suction electrode. Extracellular unit activity was recorded in the connectives posterior to M4.
