Structures and spectral properties of fluorescent analogs of pyrimidines and purines. Furano and pyrrolo-pyrimidines (8,9) can substitute for thymine and cytosine while etheno-adenine (10) and pterines (11,12) are replacements for purines. Fluorescent nucleoside analogs carry the appropriate sugar derivative instead of the 2′-deoxyribosyl moiety as the R-group.
