Right column: filaments of 30 nm length connect the IMC and the plasma membrane (blue) and are viewed perpendicular to both the parasite long axis and the electron beam, corresponding to model III in figure 6. The noise in simulated tomograms increases from top to bottom. Note that filaments can be seen if oriented perpendicular to the parasite long axis, which is the tilt axis.
