Summary of functional changes observed in a swine model of hypercholesterolemia and chronic myocardial ischemia. Hypercholesterolemic (HCHO) swine had impaired microvessel relaxation to (A) adenosine diphosphate (ADP), (B) vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and (C) sodium nitroprusside (SNP) compared with normocholesterolemic controls (NORM). HCHO animals had reduced collateral-dependent perfusion (D) and reduced microvessel density (E), indicating impaired angiogenesis.
