Average impedance at 1 kHz of SMEA electrodes during stretch (n = 10, ± standard error). The SMEA was biaxially stretched up to 11% strain and then released incrementally. The impedance of each electrode at each static stretch was measured in aCSF. During SMEA stretch, the impedance gradually increased up to approximately 2.8 MΩ and recovered to about 100 kΩ after release. (Inset) the packaged SMEA was mounted on our injury device, which precisely displaced the SMEA over a hollow tubular indenter, resulting in a biaxial strain in the SMEA that was verified optically.
