(a) The conflict resolution task: Participants are asked to resolve potential conflicts between aircraft pairs by issuing guidance control instructions. Given the limits of human perceptual ability, the task becomes increasing difficult as participant responses are sought farther from the potential conflict point. Of interest is the amount of time taken to safely resolve the conflict. (b) We observed that the magnitude of age-related performance decrement was higher among noncontrollers than that among controllers, providing evidence for the experience-related sparing hypothesis.
