The complex morphology of neuronal structure and extracellular space (A) was reduced to a simplified geometrical representation (B). In this model, neurons consisted of two connected compartments (axo-somatic and dendritic compartments). Each neuron was enclosed with a surrounding volume that represented the extracellular space and for which the K⁺ concentration was computed for determining the K⁺ equilibrium potential.
