TABLE III.

Predictors of Handrail Use at Two Years*

Percentage Correctly Predicted
Odds Ratio (Nagelkerke R2 Value) Significance of Model (P Value) Significance of Model if Variable Removed (P Value)
Model Variables in Model Handrail No Handrail Overall
Step 1 Preoperative handrail use 58% 76% 68% 0.152 <0.001 Preoperative handrail use, <0.001
Step 2 Preoperative handrail use, age 58% 81% 71% 0.263 <0.001 Preoperative handrail use, 0.001; age, 0.002
Step 3 Preoperative handrail use, age, quadriceps index 58% 86% 74% 0.316 <0.001 Preoperative handrail use, 0.001; age, 0.001; quadriceps index, 0.024

The best predictor of handrail use at two years was preoperative handrail use (Step 1). The addition of age and quadriceps index significantly improved the predictive ability of the model.
