Measurement of residual dipolar couplings in one or two alignment media places restraints on internuclear vector orientations only to the extent to which the corresponding alignment tensors are known. Addition of a third independent set of RDC data places restrictions on possible alignment tensors because in the absence of dynamics the three cones must share a common intersection relative to a molecule fixed frame.
