Schematic drawing of the superposition of the distinct contributions to the total EDL force on top of a molecule smaller than the tip: the force between the tip and the molecule, and the force between the tip and the supporting substrate. To model the last term, the tip is approximated as a sphere and the substrate as a plane. Likewise, to model the force between the tip and the molecule, the tip is considered as a plane and the molecule as a sphere.
