Vessel density in DIP chamber constructs. (a) In E-circulated constructs, endothelial (brown) sprouts appear to extend out into the matrix and, in some instances, inosculate other vessels (arrows). Within E+I-circulated constructs (b), many patent microvessels were found, but little sprouting was evident (arrows). E-circulated constructs contained significantly more microvessels (c) and fewer patent microvessels (d) than E+I-circulated sections (#p < 0.0001). (e) If lumen number was normalized to construct cross section, there was no significant difference between E-circulated and E+I-circulated samples (p = 0.93).
