Adjustments for women were cycle number, smoking in either partner and smoking exposure in utero, centre of enrolment, diseases in female reproductive organs, women’s body mass index, use of oral contraception before conception attempt, sperm concentration, and duration of menstrual cycle categorised in table 1 and entered as dummy variables equal to number of categories minus 1.
