Top: Accuracy for reporting the missing letter(s) when there was no blank frame (NF), a blank frame (F), or twelve X’s (XF) in the positions of the letters. Accuracy was high in NF and degraded in F and XF, whether 1, 4, or 6 letters went missing (abscissa). Bottom: Accuracy as a function of the delay of the blank white frame or XF. Erasure only occurs if the blank white frame or X’s immediately follows the 12-letter display; the erasure effect is restricted to 16 ms or so.
