Average soil hydraulic parameters after van Genuchten (1980) and Mualem (1976) defined in equations (2.5) and (2.6), derived from multi-step outflow experiments (Zehe et al. 2001); k_s (m s⁻¹) is the soil hydraulic conductivity, θ_s (m³ m⁻³) the saturated soil water content, θ_r (m³ m⁻³) the residual soil water content and α (1 m⁻¹) the air entry value that characterizes the maximum radius of the soil pores. The parameter n determines whether the spread of pore sizes in the pore space is wide.
