(Color online) Neutron SLD profiles along the surface normal, z, of tBLMs prepared on tethered SAMs that were adsorbed to 10 nm thick gold films by adsorption from organic solutions that contained WC14 only [panel (a)] and a 30:70 (mol:mol) mixture of WC14 and βME. The subsequent completion of the tBLMs with DPhyPC by rapid solvent exchange, i.e., incubation of the SAM with a highly concentrated ethanolic solution of the lipid, followed by the rapid replacement through injection of aqueous buffer (Ref. 46), was identically conducted in the two preparations. Note that the nSLD is almost identical in the submembrane space in panel (a) whereas it is distinct in panel (b).
