The trajectory-averaged cargo velocity 〈ν_c〉 exhibits a hysteresis loop when the external force F_ext is varied at a relatively fast rate of 2 pN/s (blue triangles). The loop becomes smaller for slower force change rate 1 pN/s of F_ext (red crosses), and vanishes when the system is allowed to reach the stationary state, i.e., for a constant force F_ext = const (black squares). The cargo is transported by four plus and four minus motors with kinesin parameters as in Table S1.
