Image a) represents a transdural B-mode US slice of the brain. b) represents the distributions associated with the binary spatial variable S defined within a local region, where light regions indicate high p(S). Images c) and d) represent the entropy H(I) and MI(I, S) criteria calculated at square regions of size 39 pixels in the US image. Note that most regions within the US fan in b) are of high H(I), while a smaller number of US regions corresponding to distinctive image patterns in a) result in high M(I, S).
