Supramolecular synthetic approach for the preparation of size-controlled gold supramolecular nanoparticles (Au-SNPs). A molecular-recognition system based on adamantane (Ad) and β-cyclodextrin (CD) was employed to assemble three building blocks: Ad-grafted 2 nm Au colloids, CD-PEI, and Ad-PEG. Ad-PEG-RGD was introduced onto Au-SNPs by in situ ligand exchange to give RGD-Au-SNPs that could recognize a certain type of tumor cell with membrane αvβ3 integrin receptors.
