NAC prevented vitreous-dependent gel contraction. A: F and FαΔx cells were subjected to a collagen gel contraction assay in the presence or absence of 0.5 ml vitreous from healthy rabbits (diluted 1:2 in DMEM). In some cases NAC (10 mmol/L) was also included. The picture shown is a representative experiment on day 3. B: The average ± SD from three independent experiments; the width of the gel on day three was measured and the area was calculated (a = πr2); there is a statistically significant difference, *P < 0.05. The data show that expression of PDGFRα enabled cells to contract when exposed to vitreous and that NAC prevented this response.
