NAC prevented patient vitreous-driven contraction. A: Primary human RPE cells that were obtained from a clinical PVR membrane were subjected to the collagen contraction assay. Vitreous from PVR patient donors (100 μl) was added together with 400 μl DMEM on top of the gel to promote contraction. Some of the wells also received NAC (final concentration of 10 mmol/L). The photograph was taken on day three. The numbers at the top of A indicate the different patients. B: The gel area was calculated, and the data from all five patients were pooled and presented as the mean ± SD; there is a statistically significant difference, *P < 0.05. The data indicate that patient vitreous induced contraction of cells that were isolated from a clinical PVR membrane and that NAC effectively blocked this response.
