Figure 1.
Increased expression of MMPs, cell adhesion molecules, and collagens in skeletal muscle of mdx mice. A: Gastrocnemius muscle from 6-week-old control and mdx mice were isolated and used to study the mRNA levels of MMP-3, MMP-10, MMP-14, VCAM-1, Col1a1, Col3a1, and TIMP-2. Data presented here show that the mRNA levels of MMP-3, MMP-10, MMP-14, VACM-1, Col1a1, and Col3a1 were significantly increased, whereas mRNA levels of TIMP-2 were significantly reduced in gastrocnemius muscle of mdx mice (N = 4) compared with control mice (N = 4). The mRNA levels were normalized using β-actin and MyHC as housekeeping genes. B: Data presented here show that the enzymatic activity of MMPs is significantly increased in gastrocnemius muscle of mdx mice compared with control mice. *P < 0.01, values significantly different from wild-type mice.
