Ischaemia caused myocardial infarction (control group) and volatile anaesthetic preconditioning (APC) with sevoflurane did not decrease infarct size (APC group). Na+/H+ exchanger inhibitor, HOE 694 (HOE group), decreased the infarct size. Mitochondrial KATP channel blocker, 5-HD, did not affect the HOE effects during reperfusion in aged rat hearts. HOE+5HD: both HOE 694 and 5-HD were added to the perfusate 10 minutes prior to ischaemia. * HOE group vs. control group, P<0.05; # HOE+5HD group vs. control group, P<0.05. N = 6 in each group.
