Figure 1. — Experimental design and sample stimuli. The experiment consisted of alternating 21-s blocks of horizontal gaze shifts (A) and control eye movements (opening/closing the eyes; B). The individual trials consisted of 1000-ms presentation of a gaze shift or control eye movement: These apparent motion stimuli were generated by displaying two 500-ms faces in succession. The faces were either gazing at opposite directions or were displayed with open or closed eyes. The gaze stimulus was followed by 750-ms presentation of a fixation cross. On null trials, the fixation cross was displayed for 1750 ms.
