Effect of DNRII expression on in vivo lung metastasis. Exponentially growing control-EGFP and DNRII-EGFP cells (0.2 × 10⁶) were injected into tail veins of five-week-old female athymic nude mice. Five animals were injected for each cell line. After nine weeks, animals were sacrificed, and lungs were removed during autopsy to examine for any metastatic colonies as green fluorescent foci under an inverted fluorescence microscope A). B) The green foci were counted and presented for each of the five animals. C) The excised lungs were subsequently fixed in Bouin’s solution. The number of metastatic nodules on the surface of each lung was counted and presented for each of the five animals.
