In vitro ETOH impaired phagocytosis via TGF-β₁. Isolated IM and AM from control P0 pups were incubated with or without ETOH (0.1%, 25 mM) added to the culture media in vitro for 4 days with daily media changes. In some experiments, the cells were incubated with or without a monoclonal anti-TGF-β₁ antibody (mAbTGF-β₁) or a nonspecific IgG. After 4 days, FITC-labeled S. aureus was added and phagocytosis was determined. PI was calculated as the percentage of cells with internalized fluorescence × the mean RFU/cell.
