MB changes its slope while h decreases, and LK and UK change their positions correspondingly and coalesce eventually. (b) Five subcases can be achieved in the w-h phase plane based on the relative size of the two time constants τwm and τhm. The trajectories in Subcases 1 and 3 reach UK and then jump to the left branch; the trajectories in Subcases 2 and 4 reach LK and then jump to the right branch; the fate of Subcase 5 is unclear since it reaches the intersection of LK and UK at the point Q. The time traces for Subcases 1 – 4 are shown on the right.
