Comparison of the SE RNA compaction time course at 3 mM MgCl2 in the presence and in the absence of Mss 116. Protein-facilitated compaction was studied in the presence of ATP. SE compaction was monitored by native gel electrophoresis (A), fraction of the compact population was plotted versus time (B) and fit as described in Materials and Methods. The rate constants for the fast-folding population (9±1%) in the absence and in the presence of Mss 116 were 3.1±0.3 and 4.1±0.4 min-1, respectively. The rate constant for the slow-folding population (11±1% in the absence of the protein and 8±3% in the presence of the protein) was 0.03± 0.01 min-1 both in the absence and in the presence of the protein.
