The second figure in the series shows how the positive charge from protonation can be delocalized to the pyrrole nitrogen and explains how Asp86 promotes formation of the proposed protonated intermediate. The positively charged intermediate serves as an electron sink for release of the acetate carboxylate as carbon dioxide. Two protons are introduced in this proposed pathway, in the first and third panels.
