The influence of sodium-free buffer on the rate of pHi recovery after the removal of ammonium chloride. Replacement of ammonium chloride with a sodium-free buffer acidified the cells but did not permit pHi recovery toward baseline. pHi recovery was observed on readdition of sodium-containing buffer. Result shows the mean ± SEM of data from 6 or 10 independent experiments. ***Significant difference from the control (P < 0.001). Inset: a typical record of pHi measured in porcine NPE cells subjected to removal and readdition of sodium from the bathing solution.
