Transfection efficacy (% of the cells transfected) and viability (those alive and adherent to the membrane) were measured as a function of pulse length (number of cycles per pulse) at 1 MHz, 300 kPa and a PRF of 100 Hz. Transfection efficacy was calculated as the percentage of fluorescent cells out of the total number of cells present. Viability was calculated as the ratio of cell densities between cells treated with and without ultrasound. Maximal transfection (0.87%) occurred with 50 cycle pulses and corresponded to 24% viability (nā‰„5, results expressed as mean +/āˆ’ S.D., * indicates p < 0.05).
