Topographic AFM images of photopatterned dextran (LiCl, 1 wt%) on PU in (a) air and (b) PBS buffer, along with their corresponding line scans. In PBS, surfaces are smoother overall with thick dextranized regions (DEX-PU) that swell by up to 2x its dried thickness from 2.3 ± 0.6 nm to 4.3 ± 1.2 nm. The PU regions (OX-PU) remain unaltered in PBS.
