Formation of peroxynitrite and nitrative damage. (a) Peroxynitrite is formed by the diffusion-limited reaction of nitric oxide, generated by nitric oxide synthase, with superoxide. (b) Peroxynitrite can react with protein, resulting in the nitration of tyrosine residues. This modification can interfere with phosphorylation of tyrosine.
