^aMeasurements for temperature, salinity, pH, oxygen, and turbidity were obtained in situ at the water-sediment interface using a CTD probe. The results are averaged for each site. Abbreviations: FTU, formazin turbidity unit; Chl-a, chlorophyll a; Phaeo, phaeopigments; Prt, proteins; Cho, carbohydrates; Lip, lipids. Coarse sand and sand = fraction < 2,000 μm and > 63 μm; Mud = fraction < 63 μm.
