Explant osteocyte viability under mechanical loading and GJIC inhibition. (a) Calcein transfer, an indication of functional GJIC, was observed in the vehicle control sample but not in the presence of gap junction inhibitor (18α-GA). Live-dead stain showed the majority of cells remained viable for all groups. (b) The co-cultured trabecular explants in all groups had similar viable osteocytes per bone area (OCY/BA) values.
