Topping these cultures with a perforated polycarbonate membrane prevented formation of conidiophores (V samples), whereas in the absence of such a membrane (S samples), spores were formed starting 16 h after inoculation. The 18S gene was used as a loading control (14). Four independent precultures were mixed to obtain sufficient biomass for the experiment. Expression in each of these is shown in the figure.
