The effect of alcohols on ATP-gated currents in P2X4Rs crosses over from inhibition to potentiation as the n-chain increases from ethanol to hexanol. Ethanol (EtOH; C2, 200 mM) inhibited, and butanol (BuOH; C4, 50 mM) produced minimal effect, whereas hexanol (HexOH; C6, 10 mM) significantly potentiated ATP-induced currents in P2X4R. ***, P < 0.001 compared with ATP only. Data are presented as mean ± S.E.M. of 12 to 16 oocytes per data point.
