Table 1.

K+ efflux from Vero and GH4 cells induced by B. cereus strains expressing different combinations of Nhe components

B. cereus (toxin combination) K+ efflux (ΔmV)
Vero cells GH4 cells
NVH75/95 (NheA + B + C) 18.0 ± 2.5* (3) 17.0 ± 3.1* (3)
MHI1672 (NheA + B) 8.6 ± 1.2* (3) 15.0 ± 3.0* (4)
MHI1761 (NheB + C) 2.6 ± 1.2 (3) 5.3 ± 2.1 (4)
Dialysis buffer 2.0 ± 0.4 (4) 2.7 ± 1.4 (3)

Results are expressed as change in voltage (mean ± SE) recorded by a K+-selective electrode in the bath after 10-min exposure to the B. cereus culture supernatants. The recording chamber contained 106 cells suspended in 2.5 ml choline-based bathing solution, and 50 μl of the various supernatants was added as indicated. The number of experiments is given in parentheses

* Values significantly different (P < 0.05) from the dialysis buffer control (one-way ANOVA and Holm-Sidak pairwise comparisons)
