Table 2.

Hazard ratios for the association of functional limitations with survival*

Model All-cause survival (deaths = 269), HR (95% CI) Competing-cause survival (deaths = 112), HR (95% CI) Breast cancer survival (deaths = 157), HR (95% CI)
Age adjusted 1.56 (1.22 to 1.98) 2.82 (1.89 to 4.21) 1.03 (0.74 to 1.42)
Fully adjusted 1.40 (1.03 to 1.92) 2.60 (1.69 to 3.98) 0.90 (0.64 to 1.26)

The study population consisted of women diagnosed with breast cancer from the Life After Cancer Epidemiology study in the United States, 1997–2008, who provided complete information on functional limitations. n = 2202; CI = confidence interval; HR = hazard ratio.

Statistical tests are based on delayed entry Cox proportional hazards models. Fully adjusted models included age, race and/or ethnicity, education, BMI, smoking, physical activity, and comorbidity using the cut points in Table 1. In models examining overall and breast cancer–specific survival, additional adjustments for tumor characteristics (stage, lymph node status, and estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and human epidermal growth factor receptor status) and treatment (chemotherapy and radiation therapy) were performed using the cut points in Table 1.
